Super 8 Review

On this past cheap Tuesday here in Saskatchewan, I decided to go and see a movie with one of my new friends. (ps. When they say cheap Tuesday out here they mean it! The cheapest theatre is $2 a movie! and the fancy Galaxy cinema, which is on parr with the Couve’s Scotiabank is $6! Could you imagine that happening in our over priced city. Never!) Okay so after I got over the sticker shock from the movie price, we headed into see Super 8. I had absolutely no clue what to expect from this new J.J. Abrams movie as the previews had been oh so mysterious! But it turns out that is the whole point of the movie. The film is made to keep the audience in the dark on multiple different plots throughout the film until the characters themselves put it all together at the end. You can really feel Spielberg’s influence shinning through in the characterization.

Speaking of characters, the amazing job the young cast did of portraying their characters was the most surprising part of the whole film! Elle Fanning, baby sister of Dakota, who played Alice, and Joel Courtney who played Joe both blew me out of the water. Not only did they add true emotion to this film, but I would say they also out acted their adult cast mates. Along with Elle and Joel were Joe’s diehard group of friends, who seemed like they came right out of a movie circa 1985. This gang of pals was the spirit of the whole movie. They added heart and comedy to what would otherwise would have been categorized as an action thriller.

That brings us to the amazing special effects and action sequences of this film. In true J.J. Abrams fashion this movie had the most advanced technology bringing some truly stimulating effects. The train crash sequence that they show in the trailer was one of the most intense parts of the film. But like everything else in this film the action is very surprising throughout the whole movie. As soon as you were starting to sink into the emotional story an explosion or attack would take place and throw the story right out of focus again. Instead of that being annoying it was exciting! I truly enjoyed the mix of action and drama!

I am giving this movie my full support. It has a quality that reminds me of a mix of Standby Me, E.T., and Abrams 2009 version of Star Trek. I think that people from all walks of life will enjoy this movie because it has a little something for everyone. One thing is for sure with this film: Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Gabriel Basso, and Zach Mills all have a big future in the movie industry, and I would bet that we are all still watching them staring in films 20 years from now.
